103,000 Litres Recovered as Navy Cracks Down on Illegal Refining in Rivers

The Nigerian Navy has intensified its crackdown on crude oil theft and illegal refining activities in Rivers State, recovering about 103,000 litres of suspected illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) during a recent operation.

The operation was conducted by personnel of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Pathfinder following intelligence reports on illegal refining activities around the Ohaji axis of Egbema-Ndoni Local Government Area.

During the raid, naval operatives uncovered three illegal refining sites containing 12 dugout pits, storage reservoirs and sacks filled with suspected illegally refined petroleum products. Two pumping machines believed to be used for the illicit operations were also recovered.

The latest action comes days after security forces disrupted similar illegal refining activities within the same area, underscoring ongoing efforts to dismantle networks involved in crude oil theft and environmental crimes.

Authorities said the recovered products and equipment were handled in line with established procedures for combating illegal refining and protecting critical oil infrastructure.

No arrests were made during the operation as the suspected operators reportedly fled the area before the arrival of security personnel.

The Navy reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining operations aimed at safeguarding Nigeria’s oil and gas assets, curbing economic sabotage and creating a secure environment for legitimate energy production and investment.

Security agencies have continued to strengthen surveillance across oil-producing communities as part of broader efforts to reduce crude oil theft and protect national revenue.
