15 Dead In South Africa Cholera Outbreak

A cholera outbreak in South Africa killed at least 15 people.

Cases have been confirmed in three of the country’s nine provinces, including Johannesburg and the capital Pretoria, reported The Times.

Pretoria’s mayor abandoned a visit to a town at the center of the outbreak after his car was surrounded by angry crowds: “Our tap water was contaminated with human faeces,” a resident told local news.

Hundreds have died in a wider outbreak, with the first death in February traced to a case arriving from Malawi.

South Africa’s growing economic collapse makes fighting the disease difficult. Power is off for up to 12 hours a day, hampering citizens’ ability to boil water to make it safe.
