21 African Migrants Found in Mass Grave in Libya

Libyan authorities announced Thursday the discovery of a mass grave containing the bodies of 21 migrants from sub-Saharan Africa. The grim find was made at a farm in the northeastern town of Ajdabiya, according to government statements cited by local media.

A Libyan national has been arrested on suspicion of killing the migrants and holding others captive. Independent news channel Al Wasat reported that some captives were rescued during the raid and hospitalized.

Libya is a primary transit route for migrants attempting to reach Europe, and its political instability has long allowed smuggling and human trafficking networks to flourish. The country has been divided between rival governments in the east and west since the 2011 uprising.

The incident has drawn renewed attention to the perilous journey migrants face and the ongoing human rights crisis in the region.
