Man Arrested for Shooting Police Officers at Ondo Checkpoint

A man identified as Nwabali has been arrested by the Ondo State Police Command for allegedly shooting police officers at a checkpoint in Ipele, Owo Local Government Area of the state. The incident occurred on December 17, 2025, at around 8:00 pm, when three armed men on a motorcycle attacked operatives of the Safer Highway Patrol who were discharging their duties at the location.

The attackers opened fire on the police officers, who returned fire in self-defense. Two police officers and a female bystander, Taiwo, sustained injuries and were rushed to the hospital for medical attention.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Abayomi Jimoh, confirmed the incident, stating that Nwabali was arrested, and the motorcycle used by the attackers was recovered. The suspect is in custody and has provided useful statements aiding the police in their efforts to apprehend the fleeing accomplices.

The Ondo State Police Command assured residents that they remain committed to fighting criminal gangs, and efforts are ongoing to arrest the remaining perpetrators and bring them to justice. The suspect will be charged in court upon conclusion of investigations.

The incident highlights the effectiveness of ongoing policing reforms and enhanced operational strategies championed by the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Kayode Egbetokun, according to the police spokesman. The state Commissioner of Police, Mr Adebowale Lawal, has vowed to continue the fight against criminal gangs in the state.
