Davido Bets Big on Super Eagles in AFCON Opener

Afrobeat superstar Davido has thrown his weight behind the Super Eagles, placing a $25,000 (approximately N36 million) bet on Nigeria’s opening Group C match against Tanzania at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. The singer, whose real name is David Adeleke, shared a screenshot of his betting slip on X, captioning it “Let’s get this W Nigeria”.

According to the Stake app betting slip, Davido has wagered on both teams to score in the match, with a potential payout of $96,564 (approximately N140 million). This is not the first time Davido has made a high-profile bet on the national team. Earlier this year, he staked $10,000 (approximately N15 million) on Nigeria’s World Cup play-off match against Gabon, predicting a Nigerian win and both teams to score.

While some fans have praised Davido’s enthusiasm for the Super Eagles, others have questioned his betting strategy, with some accusing him of prioritising profit over national pride. As a prominent ambassador for Stake, a sports betting platform, Davido’s move has also been seen as a promotional stunt by some.

The Super Eagles, led by stars Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, are favourites to dominate Group C, which also includes Tunisia and Uganda. Nigeria, a three-time African champion, will face Tanzania’s Taifa Stars at the Complexe Sportif de Fès in Morocco on Tuesday, December 23.

Despite Tanzania’s reputation for resilience, the Taifa Stars have never defeated Nigeria in a competitive fixture, further boosting confidence in the Eagles’ chances. Nigeria is currently ranked 38th in the world, compared to Tanzania’s 112th ranking in the FIFA rankings.

However, the Super Eagles’ recent failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup has tempered expectations, leaving even diehard fans cautious about their chances at the Africa Cup of Nations.
