Artisans Protest Alleged Land Grab in Lagos, Claim Harassment by Local Official
Hundreds of artisans from Isheri-Idimu Powerline in Lagos protested at the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday, alleging attempts by local council chairman Idris Balogun to disrupt their livelihoods.
The mechanics claim Balogun, backed by hoodlums, is trying to convert their allocated land for private use.
The artisans, with approvals from the Ministry of Transportation, have operated there for years, paying royalties to traditional rulers. Balogun allegedly started demanding payments, leading to harassment, arrests, and violence despite a court order maintaining the status quo.
Lawmaker Stephen Ogundipe assured the protesters of help, promising to table their grievances before Speaker Mudashir Obasa. Balogun denies allegations, claiming artisans are building permanent structures under the power line, which is prohibited.
