Guardiola Credits Renewed “Mindset and Energy” for Manchester City’s Resurgence

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has pointed to a restored collective spirit and energy as the driving force behind his team’s current winning form, following a period last season where he felt something fundamental was “missing.”

Speaking ahead of City’s New Year’s Day fixture against Sunderland, Guardiola reflected on the previous campaign, dismissing the notion that managers can provide instant fixes. He revealed a palpable shift in atmosphere around the club’s training base last year.

“Last season, something was in the fog in Manchester, surrounding our training centre. We missed something,” Guardiola stated, emphasizing he never blamed individuals during that phase.

He identified the team’s exit to Al Hilal in a preseason tournament as a pivotal moment. Despite the loss, he was impressed with the performance and the group’s cohesion during their training camp in Boca Raton. That period, filled with shared meals and strategic talks, was crucial in rebuilding the team’s foundation.

“Energy, energy, energy. We lost it last season,” Guardiola explained. “We started to train better, compete better. It doesn’t mean you are going to win but that you are able to recognise the team.”

The manager directly linked this renewed mindset to City’s current run of eight consecutive victories, acknowledging there is still room for improvement but praising the team’s competitive identity. “Now it is eight victories in a row… this mindset is better,” he concluded.
