Kogi State Enacts New Revenue Laws in Line with Federal Tax Reforms

Kogi State Governor, Usman Ododo, has formally approved two major pieces of legislation aimed at overhauling the state’s revenue collection system. The move aligns with the nationwide tax reforms recently instituted by the Federal Government.

The newly signed laws are the Kogi State Internal Revenue Service (Establishment) Law, 2025, and the Kogi State Taxes and Levies (Approved List for Collection) Law, 2025. The announcement was made in a statement by the State Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, on Thursday.

This state-level action follows President Bola Tinubu’s signing of new national tax legislation on July 26, 2025, which came into effect at the start of this year.

According to the state government, the primary objectives of the new framework are to increase internally generated revenue, improve transparency in tax administration, and foster a more conducive environment for economic growth.

Commissioner Fanwo outlined several key provisions of the laws. A significant highlight is the exemption of individuals earning less than N800,000 annually from tax obligations. He also stated that the reforms introduce simplified tax processes designed to reduce compliance costs for businesses, potentially making the state more investment-friendly.

Further benefits cited include the digitalization of tax systems to minimize manual handling and enhance accountability. Fanwo emphasized that the laws are not aimed at increasing tax rates but are intended to create a more efficient and harmonized revenue structure.

“The focus is on supporting a structural reset, driving harmonisation, and protecting the dignity of our citizens while strengthening the social contract,” the Commissioner added.
