FCT Authorities Rescue Children from Abuja Orphanage Amid Welfare Concerns

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has rescued several children from an orphanage in the Kagini area of Bwari, Abuja, following an investigation into the facility’s welfare standards and adoption practices.

The operation, conducted on Tuesday, was carried out by the FCT Department of Child Development, the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), and other security and social welfare agencies.

Officials reported that some of the children were brought into the FCT from Benue State. They have been placed in protective custody and are receiving medical and psychological support while arrangements for their care are finalized.

The rescue followed weeks of discreet investigation by the FCT Women Affairs Secretariat, led by Dr. Idris Attah, Director of Child Development, into concerns over the orphanage’s operations. Upon arrival at the facility, authorities discovered the proprietress had already fled, an action believed to be linked to the ongoing probe.

The FCTA reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing the Child Rights Act and regulating adoption processes, warning that violators would face legal consequences. Security agencies are continuing their investigation and are working to locate the missing proprietress.

This case follows a similar incident in 2025, when NAPTIP rescued eight children suspected of being trafficked from northern states to an orphanage in Asaba, Delta State.
