Rivers Assembly Clarifies Impeachment Process Against Governor is Ongoing
The Rivers State House of Assembly has stated that the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his Deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, remain active and have not been halted.
In a press release issued on Friday and signed by the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Enemi George, the Assembly clarified that the process, which began on Thursday, is being conducted in accordance with constitutional provisions.
The statement confirmed that notices detailing allegations of gross misconduct have been formally served on both the Governor and Deputy Governor by the Speaker, Martins Amaewhule. The Assembly is now awaiting their responses.
Lawmakers dismissed recent reports suggesting the process had been discontinued, labeling them as misinformation aimed at causing public discord. They reiterated their commitment to their constitutional duties despite what they described as intimidation.
The impeachment move follows a period of heightened tension in the state, including recent criticism of Governor Fubara by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, regarding a previously brokered peace agreement.
