Igbo Group Outlines Political Strategy Ahead of 2027 Elections

Chief Chekwas Okorie

Chief Chekwas Okorie, convener of the Igbo Agenda Dialogue (IAD), has announced a new political mobilization strategy aimed at strengthening the electoral influence of the Southeast in the 2027 general elections.

Speaking at a press conference in Enugu on Wednesday, Okorie stated that decades of marginalisation and unfulfilled post-war reconciliation have fueled frustration and separatist agitations in the region. He argued that rather than addressing grievances constructively, the federal government has often responded with a heavy security approach.

The IAD, which was inaugurated in August 2025, describes itself as non-partisan and pro-democracy. It aims to ensure that Igbo votes are no longer taken for granted and has set a goal of mobilising at least 35 million registered voters from within and outside the Southeast by 2027.

As part of its plans, the group will host an Igbo Political Summit in Enugu in April 2026 the first in 56 years where a new Igbo Political Charter will be unveiled.

Okorie also called on President Bola Tinubu to release Nnamdi Kanu and other detainees he described as “prisoners of conscience,” framing it as a necessary gesture for national healing.
