Police Confirm Fatal Attack on Checkpoint in Enugu
The Enugu State Police Command has reported a deadly assault on a police checkpoint along Agbani Road on Thursday night, resulting in the death of two officers.
The incident occurred on January 15, 2026. According to police spokesperson SP Daniel Ndukwe, operatives of the Police Distress Response Squad came under fire from armed assailants at the location.
In a statement released Friday, Ndukwe said the attack was unprovoked and that the police team returned fire, forcing the attackers to flee. An exchange of gunfire ensued during which the police patrol vehicle was set ablaze.
Two officers sustained critical injuries and were rushed to a hospital, where they were later pronounced dead.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Giwa, has ordered an intensified manhunt for the suspects, directing tactical units to track and apprehend those responsible. The police also confirmed the recovery of a Lexus SUV, allegedly used by the assailants, which showed signs of bullet damage.
CP Giwa has appealed to the public for information and reassured residents of the command’s commitment to security. Investigations are ongoing, and patrols have been increased in the area.
