President Tinubu Approves Commercial Oil Drilling, Major Seaport Project in Ogun State

Ogun State is set to become Nigeria’s latest oil-producing state following presidential approval for the commencement of commercial oil drilling at Tongeji Island.

Governor Dapo Abiodun announced on Thursday that President Bola Tinubu has authorized the landmark project, describing it as a major economic breakthrough for the state and its coastal communities.

“This landmark approval represents a major breakthrough for our coastal communities and signals a new era of inclusion, economic opportunity, and sustainable development,” the governor stated.

In a significant double development, President Tinubu also greenlit the long-delayed Olokola Deep Seaport project, located in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area. The multibillion-dollar initiative, now designated the Blue Marine Economic Zone, is expected to transform Nigeria’s maritime and logistics sector.

Governor Abiodun highlighted the seaport’s potential to decongest Lagos ports, unlock industrial opportunities, and leverage the new coastal highway as an alternative logistics corridor.

The governor also commended the Nigerian Navy for establishing a Forward Operations Base on Tongeji Island, a move expected to enhance border security and protect emerging oil operations.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to inclusive development, Governor Abiodun assured residents of island communities of continued government support and collaboration with security agencies to maintain peace and stability in the state.
