Kosoko Royal Family Denies Crisis Over Lagos Chieftaincy Appointment

The King Kosoko Royal Family has firmly denied claims of controversy surrounding the appointment of veteran actor Prince Babajide Kosoko as the Oloja of Lagos-elect, describing a circulating petition as “false and misleading.”

In a statement released to the press, the family asserted that the selection followed due process, family consensus, and tradition. It dismissed the petition reportedly submitted to the Lagos State Government by a faction of the Akinsanya Olojo-Kosoko ruling house as unrepresentative of the family’s stance.

The family explained that the appointment corrected a prolonged delay in filling the stool. Prince Abiola Olojo Kosoko, appointed Oloja-elect in 2020, was never installed. After years of inaction, family heads collectively decided to withdraw his nomination and appoint Prince Babajide Kosoko instead.

According to the statement, the decision was made unanimously during a meeting of principal stakeholders on January 24, 2026, which was attended by key figures, including the petition’s alleged authors. Prince Babajide Kosoko was formally presented to the wider family on January 27, 2026.

The family also refuted suggestions that the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwanu Akiolu, influenced the appointment, emphasizing that the selection was solely a family decision.

Urging Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the public to disregard the petition, the family described it as driven by personal grievances rather than legitimate concerns. It maintained that while aggrieved parties could seek legal redress, the family’s authority over the chieftaincy process remains final.
