Okonjo-Iweala Alerts Nigerians to Fake AI Video Promising Huge Investment Returns

The Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has warned Nigerians against a fraudulent AI-manipulated video circulating online that falsely claims she is endorsing a government-backed investment scheme.

In a statement issued on her official X account on Wednesday, Okonjo-Iweala described the video as unauthorised and urged the public to disregard it.

“Just alerting Nigerians. Another fake AI-manipulated video. The authorities are handling. Just wanted to alert you to be aware of this,” she said.

The video, widely shared on social media, claims viewers can participate in an official programme to grow wealth, promising earnings of up to 2,660,000 Naira within the first week on a minimum investment of 380,000 Naira. It further claims that no daily effort or financial expertise is required.

According to the video, the scheme is open to Nigerians above 30 years old, offers automated returns, and permits withdrawals at any time. It also claims that only 4,000 accounts are available, with over 80 per cent already reserved.

Okonjo-Iweala stressed that her only official social media account is on X (formerly Twitter), and she does not post on Instagram, Facebook, or WhatsApp.

“As I repeatedly said, I never post anything on Instagram, Facebook or WhatsApp. Anything emanating from these sources with my image is not from me. I only post on Twitter/X. I just don’t want people to be duped,” she said.

Authorities are said to be investigating the source of the video to curb further circulation.
