Man Arrested for Allegedly Stabbing Wife to Death in Rivers Community
The Rivers State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Mr Abuchi for allegedly killing his wife in Amaji village, Umuoyoro Community, Omuma Local Government Area of the state.
Police Public Relations Officer, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident and the arrest in a telephone interview with our correspondent on Friday. She stated that investigation into the matter had commenced.
“Yes, I can confirm the incident. The suspect has been arrested and the Commissioner of Police has ordered a detailed investigation to ensure timely justice,” she said.
The suspect has been transferred to the Eberi Police Division in Omuma LGA for further investigation.
Tragedy struck the community on Thursday when the couple visited their farmland. A source disclosed that an argument ensued between them, during which the suspect allegedly used a kitchen knife on his wife, a mother of two, resulting in her death.
According to the source, other villagers working nearby were alerted by the woman’s loud scream and rushed to the scene.
“People got to know about the incident when the woman screamed loudly. The scream attracted other villagers working around the farm. They rushed there, overpowered the man and restrained him,” the source said.
The incident has thrown the community into shock and mourning, as residents grapple to understand what led to the fatal altercation.
A security source who spoke on condition of anonymity revealed that the suspect reportedly told investigators he could not explain what came over him at the time of the incident.
Meanwhile, the Centre for Basic Rights and Accountability Campaign has condemned the act, calling for a thorough investigation.
National Coordinator of the group, Prince Wiro, described the incident as a reflection of man’s inhumanity to man, stating in a release on Friday that no justification exists for such an act.
