Tinubu Remove Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun
President Bola Tinubu has relieved Kayode Egbetokun of his appointment as the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
Sources within the Presidency, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the development to journalists on Tuesday. According to the sources, the President asked Egbetokun to step aside during a meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday.
“Yes, Egbetokun is gone,” one presidential aide confirmed when asked for comment. Another source added, “A formal statement is being prepared as we speak. The announcement will be made soon.”
When contacted for an official reaction, the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, had not responded to calls or messages at the time of this report. Similarly, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, was unreachable for comments.
Although no official statement has been released regarding a replacement, sources within the police hierarchy disclosed that a successor may have already been selected. One source, who pleaded anonymity, revealed that Tunji Disu has been contacted in connection with the position.
“He has been contacted, but we are all waiting for the official confirmation, which should come later in the day,” the source said.
Egbetokun was initially appointed as Inspector-General of Police on June 19, 2023, by President Tinubu. His tenure became a subject of public discourse in 2024 after he attained the mandatory retirement age of 60 on September 4. He, however, remained in office following an amendment to the Police Act, which extended his stay.
