Oyo Police Arrest Two Suspected Cultists at Polytechnic Ibadan, Recover Pistol and Charms

Operatives of the Oyo State Police Command have arrested two suspected cult members at The Polytechnic Ibadan following intelligence that a violent clash was imminent on the campus.

The suspects were apprehended during a police operation that led to the recovery of a locally made double-barrel pistol, two live cartridges, and a black bag containing charms.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ayanlade Olayinka, said the arrest followed a tip-off from a concerned member of the institution who alerted authorities to the presence of suspected cult members roaming the campus with intent to attack a rival group.

“A team of police operatives led by the Divisional Police Officer, Sango Division, swiftly mobilised to the institution,” the statement read.

The suspects were identified as Lawal Opeyemi, also known as Aiki, 31, and Olaniyan Opeyemi, popularly called Bojan, 29, both residents of the Apete area of Ibadan.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects may have been responsible for previous cult-related clashes within the institution. During interrogation, they confessed to being members of the Eiye Secret Cult Confraternity and are currently cooperating with investigators.

The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Femi Haruna, has ordered the transfer of the suspects to the Command’s Anti-Cultism Unit for further investigation.

CP Haruna commended the school authorities for their timely cooperation and urged parents and guardians to warn their children against involvement in secret cults and other violent groups.
