Wike Knocks Makinde, Declares PDP Ready for 2027 Battle

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has taken a swipe at Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, amid ongoing tensions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), urging him to step aside if he is not ready for the political battle ahead.

Wike made the remarks while addressing party members during a PDP National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja, where he also dismissed concerns about the party’s chances in the 2027 elections. He encouraged aspirants not to be discouraged by the absence of PDP governors in some states, insisting that electoral victory remains achievable.

“Those afraid that they will not win elections because they don’t have a governor from the PDP in their state, that is a lie. Remove fear from your body and have confidence,” Wike said.

Direct Criticism of Makinde

During his speech, the former Rivers State governor took direct aim at Makinde, criticising his political stance and past decisions.

“I was watching my friend today, Seyi Makinde, during his visit to the Bauchi State governor… You wanted to be a contractor, and I wanted power.

“You got contracts from Chevron, why didn’t you stay there and leave us to do our job? If you are not ready to play it, go home and rest. We are ready to have sleepless nights.”

Dismisses Allegations of Anti-Party Activities

Wike also dismissed allegations that he is working against the PDP, pointing out that some of his critics have since left the party.

“They were accusing me of working for the APC. Where are they today? We had 13 governors… today, how many do we have? They all ran away because they were defeated,” he said.

Despite the internal crisis rocking the opposition party, the minister maintained confidence in the PDP’s future, stressing that commitment and sincerity would determine who remains relevant after the party’s upcoming convention.

Calls for Genuine Reconciliation

He further emphasised the importance of reconciliation but warned that only genuinely committed members would be welcomed moving forward.

“No blackmail will change us. I said what I said. Even if we have two senators, it is good we have two quality people than a multitude. I said I was not going to leave the party, and I will not. I believe in true reconciliation, and we will continue to have it even after the convention,” Wike added.

The remarks highlight the deepening rift within the PDP as key figures continue to clash ahead of the 2027 general elections.
