VIDEO: Four Dead, 20 Wounded in Turkish School Shooting; Second Attack in Two Days
Three students and a teacher have been killed in a school shooting in the southeastern province of Kahramanmaras, according to local officials. At least 20 others were wounded in the attack, which marks the country’s second such incident in two days.
Governor Mukerrem Unluer told reporters that the attacker is an eighth-grade student who carried the weapon in a backpack. The student reportedly entered two classrooms and opened fire randomly.
The suspect used a firearm belonging to their father, the governor added.
Footage released by IHA news agency showed a person being evacuated from the scene with a covered body and face, as well as distraught parents who had rushed to the school. Witnesses quoted by local media said intense gunfire was heard inside the building.
Security has been tightened around the school, and television footage showed multiple ambulances in the area.
Justice Minister Akin Gurlek said prosecutors have launched an immediate investigation into the shooting.
The deadly incident comes just one day after a separate school attack in the province of Sanliurfa, where an ex-student wounded 16 people before fatally shooting himself during a confrontation with police.
School shootings remain very rare in Turkiye. In May 2024, a former student shot and killed a private high school principal in Istanbul five months after being expelled.
