Eight Dead, Dozens Injured in Train-Bus Collision in Bangkok

At least eight people have been killed and more than 30 others injured after a freight train collided with a bus in the Thai capital, Bangkok.

The accident occurred on Saturday afternoon at a level crossing in a busy downtown intersection. Emergency services and police cordoned off the scene, where the bus was left burnt out.

Bangkok police chief confirmed the death toll and said 35 people were injured. Social media footage showed the train approaching the crossing at moderate speed before hitting the bus, which immediately burst into flames.

A witness near the intersection with her daughter told local media she did not dare look back to see if there were victims.

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has ordered an investigation into the incident.

Deadly transport accidents are common in Thailand. In January, a crane collapse onto a passenger train killed 32 people in the country’s northeast. A similar collision between a freight train and a bus in 2020 killed 18 people.
