The minority caucus of the House of Representatives has delivered a sharp rebuke of the current administration, accusing federal leadership of failing to contain worsening insecurity and deepening economic hardship across the country. Speaking at a press conference at the National Assembly Complex on Wednesday, House Minority Leader Fred Agbedi asserted that the federal government has prioritized political maneuvering for the 2027 general elections over the immediate welfare and safety of citizens.

The opposition lawmakers drew attention to severe security lapses, specifically highlighting the recent tragic death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who died in captivity following his abduction alongside his wife in Katsina State. The caucus labeled the incident a profound national embarrassment and questioned the safety of ordinary citizens if high-ranking military veterans remain highly vulnerable to armed gangs. They also expressed grave concern over the unresolved abduction of school children and teachers in Oyo State, demanding an immediate, coordinated rescue operation.

Key Concerns Raised by the Opposition

The briefing outlined overlapping systemic challenges that the caucus argues require immediate executive intervention:

Economic Strain: The lawmakers stated that core fiscal reforms including the floating of the naira and the removal of the fuel subsidy have severely depleted public purchasing power, leading to widespread hunger and inflation without adequate social safety nets.

Judicial and Political Space: The caucus criticized a controversial Federal High Court ruling that ordered the deregistration of five opposition political parties. While welcoming an appellate court’s intervention to halt the order, they alleged that institutional barriers are being weaponized to polarize opposition coalitions ahead of the next election cycle.

Call for Governance Pause: The opposition formally challenged the presidency to temporarily suspend all 2027-related political rallies and endorsements to establish an immediate, six-month National Security and Economic Recovery Plan.
