President Tinubu Grants Final Six-Month Tenure Extension to Customs Boss Adewale Adeniyi

President Bola Tinubu has approved a final six-month tenure extension for Adewale Adeniyi, the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), lengthening his administration of the agency until February 2027.

The presidency announced the decision on Friday in a public directive issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. Adeniyi’s current tenure extension was originally slated to expire on August 1, 2026. However, the administration opted for an additional six-month window to give the custom chief sufficient time to finalize critical operational reforms.

According to the official statement, the extension is specifically intended to consolidate the national roll-out of the National Single Window project and establish a structured, orderly leadership succession within the service.

During this transition phase, Adeniyi will collaborate closely with the Nigeria Customs Service Board to oversee key internal administration and personnel matters.

His responsibilities over the next few months include managing the promotion of qualified personnel to the rank of Comptroller of Customs, alongside overseeing the compulsory retirement of officers who have either reached the statutory age threshold of 60 years or completed 35 years of active public service.

Adeniyi, an alumnus of Obafemi Awolowo University, joined the Nigeria Customs Service in the late 1980s and advanced steadily through the institutional ranks.

He attained the rank of Deputy Comptroller in 2012, was promoted to Comptroller in 2017, became an Assistant Comptroller-General in 2020, and was designated Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023.

President Tinubu subsequently appointed him to lead the agency as Comptroller-General in June 2023. The final six-month extension is projected to maintain institutional stability and policy continuity during the agency’s leadership transition.
