At Least 22 Soldiers and Militia Killed in Coordinated Attacks in Burkina Faso

Security sources confirmed on Tuesday that at least 22 soldiers and civilian volunteers were killed during a series of coordinated extremist attacks across northern Burkina Faso over the weekend.

The casualties occurred during intense assaults on military positions. Security officials reported that 14 soldiers and seven civilian army volunteers lost their lives during an attack on a military base in Di, located near Dedougou, on Saturday morning. Additional fatalities were reported following a separate incident in Solhan.

A third attack targeted a military outpost in Seguenega, near the north-central region of Kaya, on Sunday. While the human and material toll from the weekend’s violence was described as heavy, security sources emphasized that the military’s response prevented further disaster.

“These assaults in different regions were carefully coordinated to inflict the greatest possible losses, but the vigorous response on all sides succeeded in thwarting the attacks,” a police source stated. Following the engagements, military operations conducted in coordination with the high command reportedly resulted in the neutralization of dozens of militants, alongside the recovery of significant military equipment and logistical supplies.

Burkina Faso has been under military leadership since September 2022 and has grappled with persistent insurgencies linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State for over a decade. In an effort to bolster security, the government has increasingly relied on civilian volunteers to support military operations, though these auxiliary forces have frequently been targeted in the ongoing conflict.
