Barton Appointed Referee for France-Spain World Cup Semi-Final Clash
FIFA has announced the match officials for the upcoming 2026 World Cup semi-final, appointing Salvadoran referee Ivan Barton to lead the officiating team for the high-stakes matchup between France and Spain. The world football governing body confirmed the selection for Match 101 on Monday. Barton will oversee the fixture at Dallas Stadium on Tuesday, July 14, with kick-off scheduled for 3:00 p.m. EDT.
Barton will be supported by an international team of officials, including fellow Salvadoran David Moran as Assistant Referee 1 and Argentina’s Antonio Pupiro as Assistant Referee 2. Sweden’s Glenn Nyberg will serve as the fourth official, with compatriot Mahbod Beigi appointed as the reserve assistant referee.
The semifinal brings together two powerhouse European nations chasing distinct milestones in World Cup history. France is aiming to secure its third consecutive World Cup final appearance, following a championship win in 2018 and a runner-up finish in 2022. Led by captain Kylian Mbappé, the squad has progressed through the tournament by balancing a disciplined defense with a potent attack. A victory on Tuesday would mark France’s fifth overall appearance in a World Cup final.
Spain enters the match looking to reach the final for the second time in its history, having last won the tournament in 2010. Spurred by youthful talent like Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal, the team has stood out in the tournament for its fluid, possession-based style of play.
This match marks only the second time France and Spain have met in a World Cup tournament, with France previously securing a 3-1 victory during the Round of 16 in 2006. More recently, Spain defeated France 2-1 in the UEFA Euro 2024 semi-finals en route to continental victory. The winner of Tuesday’s match will advance to the 2026 World Cup final, while the losing side will compete in the third-place playoff.
