WAFCON: Two Super Falcons Suspended Ahead of Crucial Egypt Clash

Nigeria’s Super Falcons will be without key players Oluwatosin Demehin and Jennifer Echegini for their final Group C match against Egypt at the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) due to disciplinary suspensions.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirmed the sanctions following Nigeria’s hard-fought 1-0 victory over Zambia.

Defender Demehin received a straight red card in the 40th minute after bringing down Zambia captain Barbra Banda, who was through on goal. Meanwhile, midfielder Echegini picked up her second yellow card of the tournament, triggering an automatic one-match ban under CAF regulations.

The missing duo leaves Nigeria short-staffed ahead of a decisive fixture. The nine-time African champions reignited their title defense against Zambia after suffering a surprising 3-2 defeat to Malawi in their group opener.

In the match against Zambia, an early eighth-minute strike from Asisat Oshoala proved to be the winner. Despite playing with 10 women for over half the match following Demehin’s send-off, the Falcons held firm to secure all three points.

Group C remains tightly contested heading into the final round. Malawi currently tops the group with six points, while Nigeria and Zambia are tied on three points each. Egypt remains winless at the bottom of the group, setting up a crucial final round of fixtures to determine who advances to the knockout stage.
