Edo Govt Seals Clinic, Warns Against Training Auxiliary Nurses

The Edo State Healthcare Regulation and Monitoring Agency (EDOHERMA) has shut down Divine Blessing Basic Health Clinic in Ikpoba Okha LGA for operating without qualified personnel, poor hygiene standards, trading at the reception, and allegedly training auxiliary nurses.

According to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of EDOHERMA, Dr. Adesuwa Urhoghide, inspection and risk assessment revealed that the Facility provided general outpatient and antenatal services without evidence of valid regulatory authorization which led to the suspension of clinical activities.

She warned that the training of auxiliary nurses in health facilities will not be tolerated, as part of ongoing efforts to protect patients and address quackery in Edo State.

The Management of the Facility was directed to commence registration with EDOHERMA, address the identified deficiencies, stop training auxiliary nurses and ensure appropriately qualified healthcare professionals are available before consideration for reopening.

In a separate investigation, Rhemalite Spring Hospital, Ugbowo in Egor LGA, was visited following a complaint concerning the training of auxiliary nurses, accompanied by photographic evidence showing the Facility’s Matron presenting certificates training to auxiliary nurses.

During the investigation, the Facility denied conducting auxiliary nursing training acknowledging that they knew it is wrong to do so. Its Management also stated that the Hospital was registered with the Edo State Ministry of Health, but could not produce its last payment receipt, which led EDOHERMA inspectors to contact a staff of the Medical Services Department of the Ministry of Health in an attempt to obtain information regarding the receipt.

The CEO reiterated to the Rhemalite Team that the EDOHERMA is the statutory Agency responsible for the regulation and monitoring of health facilities in Edo State.

The Health Facility was issued a verbal warning concerning training auxiliary nurses and directed to commence revalidation with EDOHERMA and to ensure its outdoor signage reflects only the services it provides, which places it under watch for reinspection.

In an interview, the CEO of EDOHERMA stated that auxiliary nursing training will not be tolerated in Edo State health facilities, saying any health facility type under the EDOHERMA Law 2025 investigated and found to be training auxiliary nurses will be sealed.

She reminded Health facility owners to engage appropriately qualified and professionally licensed healthcare personnel and operate strictly within their approved scope of services.

They are also reminded that their outdoor signages must reflect only services they offer and not services they would offer in the future.
