Abia PDP Commends INEC for Recognising Court-Approved Party Leadership

The Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has praised the Independent National Electoral Commission for formally recognising the Abdulrahman Mohammed and Senator Samuel Anyanwu-led Caretaker National Working Committee of the party.

In a statement issued on Friday by the State Publicity Secretary, Chief Jude Udeachara, the party said INEC’s recognition follows a recent judgment by the Federal High Court in Ibadan, which nullified the party’s 2015 convention held in the same city.

The statement noted that INEC’s decision was reflected in its invitation to the Mohammed/Anyanwu-led committee to attend a quarterly strategic engagement with political party leaders. The party described the move as “a clear affirmation of the commission’s respect for the rule of law, equity, justice, and due process.”

According to the PDP, the court ruling had restrained individuals from the annulled convention often referred to as the Aminu Turaki-led group from parading themselves as members of the PDP National Working Committee.

By extending the invitation exclusively to the Mohammed/Anyanwu committee, the party stated, INEC has complied with the court order and “decisively foreclosed parallel claims to the national leadership of the PDP.”

The Abia PDP described the development as a significant step toward restoring order and legality within the party’s national leadership, particularly as it prepares for an upcoming national convention and future elections.

The statement expressed optimism that the clarity provided by INEC’s position would allow the party to focus on internal reconciliation, unity, and strengthening its structures across all levels.

The PDP reiterated its commitment to due process and urged members to respect the rule of law while working collectively to rebuild the party.
