Abia Pensioners Urge Governor Otti Against Campaign Spending Ahead of 2027

Pensioners in Abia State have called on Governor Alex Otti to refrain from spending funds on campaigns for the 2027 general elections, asserting that his performance in office has already secured him widespread popular support.
The group, operating under the aegis of Concerned Abia Pensioners, made the appeal during their biweekly meeting held on Thursday in Umuahia. They expressed strong confidence in the governor’s re-election prospects and vowed to oppose any attempt by opposition parties to manipulate the electoral process.
While reaffirming their support, the pensioners reminded Governor Otti of his commitment to settle outstanding gratuities and voiced optimism that the pledge would be honored soon.
The forum also appealed for the governor’s intervention in the prolonged leadership dispute within the state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners. They urged him to facilitate the reopening of the union’s secretariat, which has remained closed, forcing members to hold meetings in open spaces.
In their remarks, leaders of the group including Elder John Kalu, Chief Emeka Okezie, and Mrs. Agbaraevo Rosetta Iheanyichi commended the administration for ensuring the regular payment of pensions by the 28th of each month a development they described as unprecedented in the state.
Chief Okezie specifically cautioned opposition groups against attempts to influence the political process through electronic registration schemes, warning that such moves would be rejected.
“We are solidly behind this government. The governor should not waste money on campaigns. He has done more than expected within less than three years,” Okezie stated.
Elder Ochu Ochu, a former permanent secretary, reiterated the pensioners’ backing and expressed faith that all promises made to them would be fulfilled.
The meeting concluded with prayers for the governor, the state government, and the governor’s team.
