Abia State to Pilot Insurance Awareness Project in Partnership with Brokers’ Council

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has announced the formation of a high-level state committee to collaborate with the Nigerian Council of Registered Insurance Brokers. The partnership aims to launch a practical insurance awareness initiative, with Abia selected as the pilot state.
The announcement came during a business visit by the President of the NCRIB, Mrs. Ekeoma Ezeibe, and her delegation to the Governor in Umuahia.
A statement from the NCRIB noted Governor Otti’s enthusiasm for the new Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act (NIIRA) 2025. He disclosed that the working team within his government would develop sustainable ways to execute the awareness project.
Otti also stressed the importance of involving younger professionals for long-term sustainability, referencing the Abia Leadership Academy which has trained approximately 1,000 youths.
In further support, the Governor endorsed the Council’s plan to hold its 2026 Chief Executive Officers’ Retreat in Abia State this June.
During the meeting, NCRIB President Ezeibe elaborated on the NIIRA 2025, highlighting sections on compulsory insurance that outline the government’s duty of care towards citizens. She stated that Abia was chosen strategically due to the current administration’s accomplishments and the need to catalyze socio-economic growth in the eastern region.
Ezeibe outlined the benefits of robust insurance penetration, including job creation, investment encouragement, value creation, and enhanced security and healthcare access.
She described insurance as a vital tool for business continuity, protection of assets, and strengthening the social contract between government and the people.
