Abuja Court Strikes Out Criminal Charges Against Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan

An Abuja High Court has struck out the criminal charges filed by the Federal Government against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, bringing an end to a high-profile legal case that had stirred national debate.

The court’s decision on Thursday followed a formal Notice of Discontinuance filed by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation, effectively withdrawing the defamation and related charges against the senator. The case had originated from remarks she made during a televised interview.

Presiding Justice C. N. Oji acknowledged the notice and struck out the suit. In his remarks, he emphasized the importance of restraint in the use of prosecutorial authority and expressed hope that the decision would promote healing and respect for the rule of law.

Counsel for the Federal Government stated the discontinuance was made in the interest of justice and public confidence in the legal system.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan welcomed the outcome as a vindication, reaffirming her commitment to serving her constituency and defending democratic rights.

The case had drawn significant attention from civil society groups, many of whom viewed the prosecution as a challenge to free speech and political expression.
