Accord Party Petitions EU Over Rising Political Violence Ahead of Osun Election

The Accord Party has petitioned the European Union to intervene in escalating political tension in Osun State ahead of Saturday’s governorship election, citing rising political violence, harassment, and illegal detentions of its members.

In a letter signed by National Chairman Maxwell Mgbudem and addressed to the EU Ambassador to Nigeria, Gautier Migot, the party called for preventive diplomatic measures to ensure a fair and credible electoral process.

Accord alleged that political violence in the state has resulted in at least 29 deaths and multiple injuries, while over 60 of its members and supporters remain detained in Abuja and Nasarawa State.

The party expressed concern over inflammatory rhetoric, including a viral video involving Osun East Senator Francis Fadahunsi, as well as the perceived selective use of law enforcement agencies to intimidate political opponents.

“The present situation calls for preventive diplomacy rather than intervention after the damage has been done,” the party stated, urging international observers and diplomatic missions to monitor the poll closely.

The party called on security forces and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to maintain strict neutrality and safeguard citizens’ voting rights during Saturday’s election.
