ADC Formed Electoral Strategic Alliance with Accord Party to Defeat APC in Osun Governorship Polls

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) formed a strategic alliance with the Accord Party during the Osun State governorship election to prevent the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) from returning to power in the state.

Addressing the political outcome, ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi explained that the party recognized early on that running independently at full capacity risked splitting opposition votes. Such a division would have handed an advantage to the ruling party candidate. Consequently, the party aligned its efforts with the Accord Party to secure a unified opposition front.

In the election results, Accord Party candidate and incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke secured victory with 511,067 votes, defeating APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji, who polled 444,815 votes. ADC candidate Najeem Salaam recorded 17,180 votes.

Despite the low tally for its own candidate, the ADC leadership maintained that the outcome represented a political success rather than a defeat. The primary objective of the strategic collaboration was halting the APC’s return to governance, making the overall result a shared triumph for opposition forces.

Key takeaways from the political strategy include:

Opposition Synergy: The outcome demonstrates that coordinated alliances among opposition parties can successfully defeat powerful incumbents.

2027 Strategic Blueprint: The deliberate alignment in Osun serves as a practical model for opposition cooperation ahead of the upcoming 2027 presidential election.

Voter Influence: Credit for the election outcome ultimately belongs to the electorate of Osun State, who endorsed the joint effort.

Leadership Standing: Party leadership dismissed assertions that public sentiment against former governor and current ADC National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola hurt party performance, pointing to strong local grassroots support.

The success of the electoral strategy highlights the growing viability of tactical opposition coalitions in shaping regional and national elections.
