Adeleke Urges New Osun Police Commissioner to Restore Trust, Release Detainees

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has called on the newly deployed Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Zungura, to strengthen public confidence in the state police command and facilitate the release of individuals he described as political detainees.

The governor made the appeal while formally receiving the new police commissioner during a courtesy visit at the Government House. Zungura, who recently assumed duty in the state, was accompanied by senior officers of the command.

During the meeting, the police commissioner assured the governor of his commitment to maintaining peace, ensuring fairness, and addressing security concerns across the state. He pledged to work closely with the state government to promote stability and strengthen public trust in law enforcement.

Adeleke noted that although the governorship election had been concluded, efforts were still needed to fully restore peace and confidence among residents. He urged the new police leadership to ensure professionalism and impartiality in policing activities across the state.

The governor also raised concerns over a recent security incident in Ikire, where two people reportedly lost their lives. He called for appropriate disciplinary measures against officers found culpable and stressed the need for accountability within the command.

As part of his recommendations, Adeleke urged the police commissioner to reform operational units that have been accused of bias and improve collaboration between the police and the state government. He also called for regular participation of police representatives in State Security Council meetings to enhance coordination on security matters.

In addition, the governor appealed for the release of detained members of the Accord Party and an end to what he described as politically motivated arrests. He emphasized that his administration seeks only fair and professional policing that serves all residents equally, regardless of political affiliation.

Adeleke assured the police command of the state’s support in carrying out its responsibilities, stressing that such support would be provided without political conditions.

The governor further expressed optimism that the new police leadership would help rebuild trust between citizens and law enforcement agencies. He reiterated his commitment to promoting peace, justice, and unity across the state while encouraging all stakeholders to work together for lasting stability.
