AEDC Announces Widespread Power Outage, Restoration Time Uncertain

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has notified customers of a widespread power outage across its network, with no clear timeline for when electricity will be restored.

In a public notice issued on Tuesday, the DisCo confirmed a complete loss of supply but stated that its technical teams are working with stakeholders to resolve the issue. “We do not have a view of when we will be restored to the grid; however, our technical teams are working closely with relevant stakeholders to ensure prompt restoration,” the company said.

The outage is linked to a collapse of the national grid earlier in the day. Reports indicate the system failed at approximately 11 a.m., causing power supply to all 11 distribution companies in Nigeria to drop to zero megawatts. This triggered immediate blackouts nationwide, affecting homes, businesses, and essential services.

Officials have not yet publicly stated the cause of Tuesday’s collapse. This incident follows a pattern of recent grid failures, including a near-total collapse just last Friday and another significant disruption in late December 2025. In March of last year, a major collapse occurred shortly after the government celebrated a rise in power generation to 6,000 megawatts, causing output to plummet below 1,000 megawatts.

AEDC has apologized for the inconvenience and asked affected customers for patience, promising to provide updates as more information becomes available.
