Aguiyi-Ironsi’s Family Calls for FG Apology, Compensation 58 Years After Counter-Coup

The family of Nigeria’s first military Head of State, Major General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, has requested a formal apology and financial compensation from the Federal Government over his assassination during the July 1966 counter-coup.

Speaking on behalf of the family during a television interview, Imo Aguiyi-Ironsi emphasized the need for official recognition, compensation, and national reconciliation to heal long-standing wounds.

Describing the late military leader as a patriotic and visionary figure, the family spokesperson stressed that Aguiyi-Ironsi played no part in the violent January 15, 1966 coup that led to the deaths of several key political leaders. Instead, he assumed leadership as the most senior military officer at the time to restore order.

Aguiyi-Ironsi served as Head of State for six months, from January 16 until July 29, 1966. His tenure was cut short during a mutiny led by northern military officers, during which he was killed alongside his host, Lieutenant Colonel Adekunle Fajuyi, in Ibadan.

The family expressed hope that current national leaders will take up the call for justice and help bring closure to the historic tragedy.
