Aliko Dangote to Allocate One-Third of Estate to Charity in Succession Plan

African business leader Aliko Dangote plans to commit 33 percent of his fortune to philanthropic initiatives as part of his estate and succession planning, according to his daughter, Halima Dangote.

Speaking in an interview with Bloomberg, Halima a trustee of the Aliko Dangote Foundation explained that her father secured formal family consent to integrate the major bequest into his will. The 33 percent allocation reflects the maximum allowed under Islamic Sharia inheritance principles for third-party bequests.

With Dangote’s net worth currently estimated at $35.1 billion according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, the pledge would direct approximately $11.7 billion toward charitable causes.

Halima noted that the foundation’s operations focus heavily on health, education, nutrition, and emergency relief. Approximately 70 percent of funding supports initiatives within Nigeria, 20 percent is directed toward projects across broader Africa, and the remaining 10 percent funds international programs.

Established in 1994, the Aliko Dangote Foundation previously received a $1.25 billion endowment a decade ago, followed by an additional $700 million in funding. The organization has notably collaborated with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and northern Nigerian state governments on public health campaigns, including the eradication of wild poliovirus in Africa.
