Amnesty International Urges Action After Bandits Kill Seven, Abduct Women and Girls in Sokoto

Amnesty International has called on Nigerian authorities to launch an urgent investigation into a deadly bandit attack in Sokoto State that claimed seven lives and led to the abduction of more than 17 residents, including women and young girls.

The attack reportedly occurred on August 19, 2026, in Dinawa, Munki, and Gidan Dare communities in Wurno Local Government Area. According to the rights organisation, at least 15 of those kidnapped were women and girls, raising concerns about the growing insecurity facing vulnerable populations in rural areas.

Amnesty International said the incident highlights the persistent security challenges confronting communities across parts of Sokoto State, where residents continue to face frequent attacks by armed groups.

The organisation noted that recurring violence has forced many villagers to abandon their homes, particularly in the eastern and southern parts of the state. It added that the continuous attacks have disrupted livelihoods, displaced families, and created a climate of fear among residents.

The rights group also expressed concern over the impact of insecurity on farming activities, warning that agricultural communities are struggling to survive amid ongoing violence and kidnappings.

Amnesty International urged both federal and state authorities to strengthen security measures, protect rural communities, and ensure that those responsible for the attacks are brought to justice.

The latest incident adds to growing concerns over banditry and violent attacks in northern Nigeria, where many communities continue to face threats from armed criminal groups despite ongoing security operations.
