Anambra Community Petitions Regulator Over Disputed N38 Million Electricity Bill

Residents of Umuodum, Ogba Quarters in Mbaukwu, Anambra State, have petitioned the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) against the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) over an alleged N38.1 million electricity bill they insist has already been paid.

In the petition, the community accused EEDC of collaborating with some of its former leaders to demand payment for bills that were previously settled. According to the petitioners, power supply to the area was disconnected based on the alleged debt.

The community stated that they were shocked to receive a demand letter from EEDC in late November 2025, requesting payment of N38,123,672.73. They alleged that the letter was improperly delivered through the youth leader rather than the current head of their development union, suggesting an attempt to cause confusion.

The petitioners claimed that under a former administration led by Chief Johnbosco Okafor, funds were collected and paid to EEDC. They are now calling on NERC to compel EEDC to provide documentation of that payment or officially confirm that no payment was made at that time.

When contacted for comment, EEDC’s Head of Communication referred inquiries to the Head of Communications for FirstPower Electricity Distribution Limited, stated to be the distributor responsible for the Anambra region.

The community has appealed to NERC to resolve the matter, maintaining that they should not be required to pay the same bill twice.
