Anambra Integrates Practical Skills into Junior Secondary Education

The Anambra State Government has launched a new educational initiative, introducing 15 entrepreneurial subjects into the Junior Secondary School curriculum across the state. The move aims to equip students with practical skills and foster an entrepreneurial mindset from an early age.
Subjects introduced include Solar Installation, Garment Making, GSM Repairs, Agriculture and Processing, Plumbing, Tiling, POP Installation, Event Management, Bakery, Hairstyling, Make-up, Interior Design, CCTV/Intercom Installation, Digital Literacy, IT, and Robotics.
Speaking at the unveiling ceremony held at Igwebuike Grammar School in Awka on Friday, the Chairman of the State Post-Primary Schools Service Commission, Professor Nkechi Ikediugwu, explained the initiative’s goal.
“In today’s rapidly changing world, education must go beyond theory and examinations to equip students with practical skills, creativity, innovation, and an entrepreneurial mindset,” Ikediugwu stated. “The goal is to prepare learners not just to seek jobs, but to create value, generate employment, and contribute meaningfully to economic development.”
Echoing this sentiment, Cyril Nwuche, a staff member of Nnamdi Azikiwe University who also addressed the event, described the policy as a pathway to transforming learners both economically and socially. He emphasized that traditional academic instruction alone is no longer sufficient to prepare children for the future.
This curriculum shift aligns with a broader effort by the state government to revitalize public education. As reported in October 2025, the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo has recruited 8,115 teachers to bridge staffing shortages and improve learning outcomes.
Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Chiamaka Nnake, previously stated that the large scale recruitment, conducted through an open application process attracting candidates nationwide, is a core part of the government’s strategy to ensure quality education is accessible to all children in the state.
