Anthony Joshua

Former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua is seriously contemplating retirement from boxing, according to his uncle, Adedamola Joshua. The 36-year-old boxer privately informed his family of his decision following a fatal car crash in Nigeria last week that claimed the lives of two close friends and team members.

“The major thing is that he has retired from boxing,” Adedamola Joshua confirmed. “We are glad… each time he’s fighting, it is too much trauma for us.”

Joshua survived the collision on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, which instantly killed his strength coach Sina Ghami and personal trainer Latif Ayodele. He was hospitalized with minor injuries.

The boxer has pledged lifelong support to the families of the deceased, a commitment echoed by a source close to him: “AJ is fiercely loyal to his friends and their families and will be there for them for the rest of their lives.”

He broke his public silence Sunday, posting a tribute on Instagram captioned “My Brothers Keeper” after attending the victims’ funeral service in London.

The driver of the vehicle, Adeniyi Kayode, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving and related offences. His lawyer stated the brakes failed and noted Joshua had moved to the back seat before the crash for better visibility.

Joshua was in Nigeria on holiday after his December knockout victory over Jake Paul. His uncle addressed concerns the tragedy might affect the boxer’s connection to Nigeria, stating, “This is your root.”
