APC Lists Achievements As It Defends Tinubu’s Electricity Pledge

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council says President Bola Tinubu’s campaign promise to end estimated electricity billing and ensure stable power supply must be considered in its full context, including the administration’s efforts and achievements since assuming office in 2023.
A statement by the Council’s Spokesperson, Dele Alake, indicates that the President had, during a meeting with members of the Organised Private Sector in Lagos ahead of the 2023 general elections, promised to address the longstanding challenges in the power sector.
The statement notes that Tinubu had also pledged to provide Nigerians with an adequate explanation should his administration fail to fulfil the promise before seeking a second term.
It argues that the commitment should be assessed alongside measurable improvements in electricity supply, metering, infrastructure and market stability.
The APC says within two weeks of assuming office, President Tinubu signed the Electricity Act, 2023, which liberalised the power sector and allowed state governments to participate in electricity generation, transmission and distribution.
It identifies Lagos, Enugu, Abia, Ekiti, Oyo, Kaduna and Niger as states that have begun taking advantage of the legislation by establishing electricity regulatory agencies and attracting private investment.
The statement also highlights the Presidential Metering Initiative, saying more than 1.5 million customers have been metered in the last three years, as the administration works to address the country’s metering gap.
It adds that the Federal Government has introduced a four-trillion-naira bond programme to settle verified legacy debts owed to power generation and gas companies, with the first two tranches raising more than 1.2 trillion naira.
The APC further cites ongoing investments in transmission infrastructure, including the upgrade of substations and expansion of grid capacity.
