APC Sweeps Five of Six FCT Area Councils, PDP Claims Gwagwalada

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured a commanding victory in the 2026 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections, winning five of the six chairmanship seats, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) claimed victory in only one council.

Results released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday showed the APC clinching chairmanship positions in Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Abaji, Bwari, Kwali and Kuje. The PDP, however, managed to secure Gwagwalada Area Council.

The declaration of results in Kuje was not without controversy, as the PDP had earlier accused INEC of delaying results from two wards, warning that the situation could threaten the credibility of the electoral process. The party alleged that the delay raised concerns over possible manipulation, citing what it described as its narrow lead in the affected areas.

Despite the objections, INEC proceeded to declare APC candidate Danjuma Shekwolo winner of the Kuje chairmanship election after he polled 17,269 votes.

In Gwagwalada Area Council, the PDP recorded its sole victory. Candidate Mohammed Kasim secured 22,165 votes to defeat the APC’s Yahaya Shehu, who garnered 17,788 votes. Returning Officer Philip Akpen confirmed that Kasim, “having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected.”

Other results in Gwagwalada showed APGA polling 1,687 votes, while ADC scored 1,366.

In Bwari Area Council, APC’s Joshua Ishaku emerged victorious with 18,466 votes. Returning Officer Mohammed Nurudeen announced his return as winner, with ADC polling 4,254 votes and ZLP securing 3,515.

The APC also retained control of Abuja Municipal Area Council, where incumbent chairman Christopher Maikalangu was re-elected after a decisive win with 40,295 votes. Collation Officer Andrew Abue declared Maikalangu winner, stating he had met all legal requirements. ADC trailed with 12,109 votes, while PDP polled 3,398. SDP and NNPP managed 2,185 and 1,694 votes respectively.

In Abaji Area Council, APC candidate Umar Abdullahi Abubakar won with 15,536 votes, far ahead of the PDP, which scored 4,547 votes. ADC managed just 37 votes.

Similarly, in Kwali Area Council, APC’s Nuhu Daniel secured victory with 17,032 votes, defeating PDP’s Haruna Pai, who polled 8,575 votes.
