Apprentice, 21, Arrested for Allegedly Killing Master with Pestle in Anambra

The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 21-year-old apprentice, Chiemerie Anieke, for allegedly killing his master with a pestle in Onitsha.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, February 15, 2026, during which the suspect also allegedly attacked and injured his master’s wife.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident to SaharaReporters on Monday. He stated that the suspect allegedly struck his master, Mr. Ikechukwu Nwite, on the head with a pestle, leading to his death. The victim’s wife, Mrs. Ogechukwu Nwite, was also attacked during the incident.

According to the police spokesperson, the pestle used in the alleged crime has been recovered from the scene.

SP Ikenga disclosed that preliminary investigations suggest the suspect was provoked by the manner in which the deceased admonished him over alleged bad behaviour. This reportedly included pilfering money meant for the shop, staying out late at night, and drug use.

Mrs. Nwite was rescued from the scene and rushed to a hospital, where she is currently responding to treatment.

The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Awka for a comprehensive investigation.

SP Ikenga reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to thoroughly investigating the matter and prosecuting anyone found culpable in accordance with the law.
