Argentina top FIFA rankings, Nigeria stays 26th

World champions Argentina have retained the number one spot in the latest FIFA rankings released on Thursday, strengthening their position ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Spain remain in second place, while France have dropped to third following a defeat before recovering with subsequent victories. England and Portugal complete the top five, with Brazil placed sixth.
Nigeria held on to 26th position globally after a run of mixed results. The Super Eagles recorded wins over Zimbabwe and Jamaica at the Unity Cup in London but were later held to a 2-2 draw by Poland and suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat to Portugal in an international friendly.
Morocco continue to lead African nations, climbing to seventh place in the world.
The latest rankings come as attention turns to the 2026 World Cup, to be hosted jointly by the United States, Mexico and Canada. The tournament will feature an expanded field of 48 teams for the first time.
