Armed Robbers Kill POS Operator in Benin City Attack

Benin City, Edo State – A Point-of-Sale operator, Raphael Eletanye, 38, was killed during an armed robbery attack on January 3, 2026, in Benin City, the Edo State Police Command confirmed on Sunday.
The incident occurred at about 9:50 p.m. along Murtala Muhammed Way, near Upper Uwa Junction, where the victim operated his business. According to eyewitness accounts, the assailants arrived in an unregistered white minibus, attacked the operator, and fled the scene.
Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, Eno Ikoedem, stated that the victim was rushed to the hospital but was later confirmed dead from injuries sustained during the robbery.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was shot on the thigh before the assailants carted away an unspecified amount of cash,” Ikoedem added.
The Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident, with efforts underway to identify and apprehend the suspects.
The police have called on members of the public with relevant information to contact the command through its emergency lines.
Ikoedem also noted that security efforts in the state have been intensified in collaboration with other agencies, with support from the Edo State Government in the form of vehicles and equipment to enhance safety.
