ASUU Embarks on Indefinite Strike at Plateau State University Over Unresolved Demands

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Plateau State University chapter, has commenced an indefinite strike following what it described as the university management’s failure to address key welfare and institutional issues raised by the union.

The decision was reached after a congress meeting held on Wednesday, shortly after the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum earlier issued to the university authorities.

In a statement jointly signed by the chapter’s leadership, the union said its six-point demand had not received satisfactory attention despite previous engagements with the institution’s management.

Among the issues highlighted are the implementation of the Contributory Pension Scheme, full enforcement of the 2025 agreement between the Federal Government and ASUU, and payment of outstanding entitlements dating back to January 2026.

The union is also seeking the settlement of 22 months’ arrears linked to the 25 and 35 per cent wage award, improved security measures on campus, provision of staff housing, and an end to alleged harassment of union officials.

According to the union, members were left with no option but to withdraw their services after exhausting available channels for dialogue.

Following approval from ASUU’s National Executive Council, lecturers have been directed to suspend all academic activities indefinitely pending further developments.

The industrial action is expected to disrupt teaching and other academic operations at the institution until the outstanding issues are resolved.
