ASUU Urges Ondo Government to Implement 2025 Federal Agreement

The Akure Zone of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has formally called on the Ondo State government to implement the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement across all state-owned tertiary institutions. The union reports that six months after the agreement took effect on January 1, 2026, the state has yet to adopt its provisions, leading to ongoing concerns regarding lecturer welfare.
During a press briefing at the University of Medical Sciences in Ondo on Wednesday, ASUU Akure Zonal Coordinator, Adeola Egbedokun, emphasized that the delay is negatively impacting the quality of higher education in the state. He noted that the agreement, signed on December 23, 2025, includes essential financial provisions such as the Consolidated Academic and Research Allowance, the Earned Academic Allowance, and the Professorial Allowance.
Egbedokun highlighted that the union had previously agreed to forfeit over N100 billion in accumulated arrears owed by the federal government, provided that the Earned Academic Allowance would be integrated into lecturers’ monthly salaries at 10 percent of their basic pay. He argued that as an oil-producing state, Ondo has the financial capacity to fulfill these commitments and criticized the government’s decision to establish a review committee.
“What is required is implementation, not prolonged committee engagements that merely postpone government action while lecturers continue to suffer,” Egbedokun stated. He warned that if the situation is not addressed with urgency, the union will be forced to consider all legitimate industrial actions available to press their demands.
In response, the Ondo State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Professor Igbekele Ajibefun, stated that the government is actively working toward implementation. He noted that the domestication of the federal agreement is a nationwide process and that Ondo State is taking proactive steps to address the matter.
“I am sure that very soon, the Ondo State Government will take action on it,” Ajibefun said. “Ondo State is already working on its implementation and has taken proactive steps in that direction.”
