Atiku Dares FG to Probe Alleged $16bn Power Project Spending

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has challenged the Federal Government to launch a full investigation into the alleged $16bn spent on power projects during previous administrations, insisting he is ready to face prosecution if any evidence links him to wrongdoing.

Atiku said allegations surrounding the controversial power sector expenditure have been repeatedly raised over the years without resulting in any criminal charges against him. He maintained that several investigations had been conducted into the projects and that no findings had implicated him.

The former vice president stressed that he has nothing to hide and urged the government to present any evidence before the appropriate authorities rather than relying on what he described as politically motivated accusations.

He argued that renewed discussions about the power projects were resurfacing at a time when questions were being raised about the management of public funds generated from the removal of petrol subsidy.

Atiku called on the government to provide a detailed account of how revenues saved from the subsidy removal policy have been utilised, noting that many Nigerians continue to grapple with rising fuel prices, increased transportation costs and growing economic hardship.

According to him, citizens accepted the painful consequences of the policy on the understanding that the additional funds would be used to drive development and improve public welfare. He, however, questioned whether the expected benefits have been delivered.

The former vice president also raised concerns about government spending priorities, arguing that transparency and accountability remain essential as Nigerians seek answers on the use of public resources.

His remarks come amid increasing political exchanges between the opposition and the Federal Government over economic reforms, cost-of-living pressures and the impact of policies introduced since the removal of fuel subsidy.

With public debate intensifying over economic management and accountability, Atiku has continued to position transparency in government finances as a key issue, while challenging authorities to substantiate any allegations connected to the long-running controversy over power sector spending.
