Atiku Urges Opposition Unity, Warns Against Attacks on Peter Obi

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called for unity within Nigeria’s opposition, cautioning that verbal attacks targeting former presidential candidate Peter Obi are counterproductive and only benefit the ruling party.
In a post on social media platform X on Tuesday, Atiku stated that such infighting undermines the opposition coalition and the broader national interest.
“Anyone who insults Obi or Atiku does not mean well for the leaders, the Coalition ADC and for Nigeria and Nigerians,” he wrote.
He emphasized that internal division primarily advantages the All Progressives Congress (APC), which he described as the main beneficiary of opposition strife. “The only persons who benefit from such a civil war are the APC urban bandits who want to maintain the satanic status quo,” Atiku added.
His comments come amid rising exchanges among supporters of opposition leaders and accusations that Atiku’s own supporters have been targeting Obi, potentially straining the fragile coalition.
The coalition, formed under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has gained prominence following a series of high-profile defections aimed at challenging the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
Peter Obi officially joined the ADC in December 2025 after departing the Labour Party, expressing the need for a stronger unified opposition to address national challenges. Atiku had defected to the ADC a month earlier, describing his move as part of a mission to “rescue Nigeria.”
